Paul Gruninger
Paul Gruninger was born on October 27, 1891 in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Paul was a Swiss border police man and a football player who tried to stop Jews cross to Switzerland illegally by seeing their passports for the letter J. Though he helped the Jews cross to Switzerland by saying they already entered to go to Switzerland which was In March 1938. Paul also stopped people who were trying to see if Jews crossed illegally. Paul was a true hero and saved 3,600 Jews. Even though Paul was a true hero he was sent to court in 1939. Two years later in 1941 he was found guilty and sent to jail. After Paul payed the fine and did his time in jail, he was out of jail. After he got out of jail, it was hard to find a job in Switzerland when you have been in jail. Paul could not find a job and was poor. When they found out what he did in 1970 the Swiss sent an apology to Paul,Since Paul was so poor and so miserable he died in 1972. A year before Paul's death Paul was proclaimed into the Righteous Among the Nations and was into Yad Veshem. Paul was now remembered for saving Jews. Still Swiss said he was still guilty even though he saved lives. It was not until 1995, 23 years after his death he was not guilty for what he did. Instead he is remembered for being a true hero by helping Jews cross to Switzerland and freedom. The Swiss now treat him like a hero and is one. People now remember him as a hero. There were many holocaust heroes and Paul was one of them.
