Diamitar Peshev was a hero of the holocaust. He was a Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria and Minister of Justice before World War II. The holocaust was the murder of six million Jews in Europe. It was all run by Hitler. He was a awful man. He blamed the Jews for all Germany's problems, even though they didn't do anything.
Diamitar Peshev was born in in 1884, in a town named Kyustendil, Bulgaria. He moved when he was in his teens to Sofia.
What he did to help the Jewish people of the holocaust
He tried to stop the deportation of Bulgaria's jews being sent to death camps all at once. He called the prime minister, but he wouldn't listen and didn't care. So he called his friend who worked in office and after a lot of arguing and persuading, he tried convinced him to stop those 50,000 Jews being sent to Nazi death camps.
Was he successful?
Yes, he was successful. He convinced his friend to stop the the Jews from being sent to death camps. He only did it to save his Jewish friends in Kyustendil, but endend up saving 50,000 Jews. He was sentenced to death after World War II, but then some of his friends from Kyustendil came to Sofia and defended him in court and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but ended up getting out after one. Sadly, Diamier Peshev passed away in 1973.
How he is remembered
After World War II, he was forgotten. Not until 1973, the year he had passed away, he was given an award. Yad Vashem awarded him the title "Righteous Amoung the Nations" for him saving all of Bulgaria's 50,000 Jews. He was an amazing man. There is also a museum honoring him in Bulgaria.
