I will betray tomorrow, not today. Today, tear off my fingernails. I will not betray! You do not know the extent of my courage. I know. You are five hands, harsh and full of rings. You are wearing hob-nailed boots. I will betray tomorrow. Not today, Tomorrow. I need the night to make up my mind. I need at least one night to disown, to abjure, to betray. To disown my friends, to abjure bread and wine, to betray life, and to die.
- Marianne Cohn
The Holocaust was during 1933-1945 where Adolf Hitler tried to extinguish all Jews because he tried to blame Germanys economic problems on the Jewish people. So Hitler gathered a whole army of Germans called Nazis and put his plan into action. His plan killed more than six million Jewish people that were innocent. People called resistance fighters, a seceret group that help Jews go to Switzerland and Sweden, which are free countries.
Resistance fighters were very important people during world war ||. The resistance fighters were people that would do anything they needed to do to save as many Jewish people as they could wether it is sneaking into concertration camps and getting them out there or transporting them to Sweeden and other free country's. They would risk their lives to save Jewish people. They were brave people who didn't believe in Hitler's plans.
Marianne Cohn was born on September 17,1922 in Mannheim Germany. She moved with her family to Berlin in the year of 1929 and following the Nazis seizure of power and fled to Spain. A year later,1930, they escaped the Spanish civil war and moved to France. Soon after she moved to France, Marianne joined the resistance and used a fake identity to the name of Marie Colin. She took journeys to escape groups of 30 children to safety. Until one day she was arrested on May, 1944 when driving 28 children to the Swiss border. The resistance was going to rescue Marianne, but she refused to cooperate and stayed with the children. Marianne Cohn was never seen again until the day after the war was over was discovered. She was hastily buried in the ground and tortured to death. Marianne Cohn was only 22 when she died, but she saved over 1,600 children in her days. The Righteous Among the Nation planted a memorial garden in memory of Marianne Cohn. Marianne Cohn was a true hero during the Holocaust.
