Giorgio Perlasca was a very important Holocaust hero. The Holocaust was a tragic event from 1933 to 1945 when Hitler blamed Germany's economic problems on the Jews and gathered soldiers that he called Nazis, and he made them torture Jews. Giorgio Perlasca was born in Como, Italy on January 31, 1940. Giorgio worked for an Italian importing firm in Budapest, Hungary where he was in charge of the "safe houses" for Jews. When Sanz-Briz left, Giorgio started to give out protective passes to Jews. Giorgio used a fake pass and aid of a Swiss driver and escaped to a Spanish embassy and got a Spanish passport. Giorgio also worked with neutral nations like Sweden, Switzerland, and Portugal to find a safe place for Jews. He had the chance to escape, but he chose to give help and aid to over 5,000 Jewish people. Giorgio changed his name from Giorgio to Jorge and tried to save as many Jews as possible. Giorgio then started working with Raoul Wallenberg from November, 1944 to January, 1945 handing out protective passes to Jews. He saved thousands of Jews working with Raoul Wallenberg and would go to safe houses for Jews and report that they were safe enough. Giorgio saved about 3,500 of Hungary's Jews with all his honorable work. He died on August 15, 1992, and he received many honors in the five years before his death.
