His story:
Oskar Schindler was an unlikely hero of the Holocaust. Oskar was born April 28th, 1908. He died in October of 1974. He saved more than 1,000 Jewish people during World War II. His wife was named Emilie Schindler. He is the only Nazi to be buried with Jewish people.
Holocaust:
The Holocaust is an event during WWII. Adolf Hitler blamed Jewish people for economic problems in Germany. He came up with something called "The Final Solution." That was Hitler's idea of "saving" Germany, killing all the Jewish people. First, the Jewish population in Germany was around 9,000,000, at the end of the war, it was 3,000,000! Right once other countries started hearing about this, they were quick to act. America sent reinforcements to Germany to try to stop Hitler and his evil plan. Soon, America and other countries helped beat back the Nazi forces, and bring back good to Germany.
How he helped:
He owned a factory worked by Jewish workers. At this time, he was in the Nazi force, so that's why he got Jewish workers. The workers were brought there against their will, but when Hitler ordered all Jewish people to go on a train to a Nazi concentration camp, he didn't bring his Jewish workers because he wanted factory to still run, but realized that he was saving innocent lives. He saved 800 men and 400 women from the concentration camp, Auschwitz, Germany's largest killing center. He had owned many factories, but just so that Jewish people could pretend to work there. May 9th, 1945, Soviet troops liberated Schindler's camps.
His life later:
After the war, Oskar and his wife moved to Regensburg until 1949. In 1949 they moved to Argentina. Schindler later died in Germany, penniless.
Other neat facts:
Yad Vashem awarded him and his wife. He got the title "Righteous Among Nations" for saving innocent Jewish people at great personal risk.
He began working with "Amt Auslands/Abwehr (Office of Military Foreign Intelligence) of German Armed Forces in 1936.
He has a movie made about him called ¨Schindler's List.¨
He had a list of people who he saved, and he called them ¨His Children.¨
Oskar died with no money AT ALL!
