Nicholas Winton was born on May 19, 1909 in London. He was born to Jewish parents who converted and baptized him. This is why Israel has never recognized him at Yad Vashem.
Nicholas Winton visited Prague in 1939 with an invitation from his friend from the British Embassy. He noticed that the refugee camps were handling mostly adults and elderly. He was alarmed by the amount of people endangered, and he noticed there was nothing being done for children. Winton wanted to help save the children, so in 1939 he organized the Czech Kindertransport. There was 8 trains that transported kids to England and Sweden, some of the very few countries the were not occupied by the Nazis. He sent a letter to the U.S. asking to transport some children there, but they refused. Winton saved 669 children and found each and every one of them a foster home. There was a ninth train that was scheduled to leave on September 3, 1939, but never left the station and disappeared. None of the 250 children that were on the train were ever seen again. To this day no one knows what happened to the ninth train.
Nicholas Winton's accomplishment of saving 669 children went unnoticed for more than half a century until his wife, Gretta found a briefcase with letters from the children's parents. One of the children, Vera Gissing wrote a biography on Winton.
