Giovanni Paltucci was a holocaust hero during the time period of World War II. The holocaust was a dark time, and it took place in Germany. Germany had a dictator, and his name was Adolf Hitlor. He disliked Jewish citizens, and wanted to exterminate them. Of course, there were people who were against this nasty idea. They were called, resistance fighters. Giovanni Palatucci was one of them. Giovanni was born in Montella Itally, May 31st, 1909. He graduated college from the University of Turin with a degree in law. He practiced to be an attorney for four years, but then moved to Fiume, and decided to become an Italian Police Officer. He never got married, nor did he have any kids. When Jewish people became banned in Fiume in 1938 because Nazi's forced them to, Giovanni abused being the head chief police officer, and gave Jewish people in Eastern Europe passports to Fiume in Italy. He helped Mussolini when they surrendered to the Nazi's by breaking into Synagogues, and then destroyed records of the Jewish people before the Nazis would come. He joined the Nazis in 1940, not because he was on their side, but because he could help the Jewish people in secret by handing them passports. Giovanni was soon nicknamed the, "Italian Oskar Shindler." Just by giving out passports, and destroying documents, he saved over 5,000 people. Sadly, Giovanni died at the age of 35 because the Nazis figured out his plans, and he was sent to jail around September, and was supposed to be exicuted around the end of November. Yet, he managed to survive a little bit longer, but not that long. The Nazis decided the death sentence on the date of: Feburary 10th, 1945, just a couple months away from his 36th birthday. He is remembered by Vad Vashem because he was thought as hero. I put a picture in the slide show below, so you can get a nice visual of what it looks like. There is a stamp honoring him, and around his grave, there is a small memorial covering his it.
